Above all things, know thyself!

The Rider-Waite-Smith Eight of Wands is deliberately composed for mundane divination, with its deeper esoteric structure carefully veiled. Against a clear blue sky and a lush, fertile landscape, Waite presents eight leaf-sprouting wands suspended mid-flight, as if caught in a moment of arrested motion. The sprouting leaves unmistakably signal fertility, propagation, and growth, while the very suspension of the wands suggests unseen momentum rather than visible cause.

The phallic form of the wands once again conveys the Mercurial force—the generative Word in motion—communicating, transmitting, and penetrating space with speed and intent. Mercury here is not intellectualized, but kinetic: thought becoming movement, will becoming action. The rapidity of growth implied by the sprouting twigs reinforces this principle of swift manifestation.

Although the suit of Wands belongs to the Universal Element of Fire, its expression here is refined rather than explosive. The sunny sky and open terrain indicate Fire operating as directed force, not destruction—Fire released into motion. Waite, still bound by his oaths of secrecy, offers no overt Hermetic symbols, no Tree of Life, no explicit astrological glyphs. The card is intentionally simple—almost austere—masking its deeper initiatory implications beneath an accessible surface.

Yet the essential meaning is unmistakable. Because the wands are already airborne, the force has been launched. There is no resistance shown, no opposing figures, no obstruction. Thus, the image communicates speed, immediacy, and swift resolution. Once the current is set in motion, events unfold rapidly, often beyond the control of the querent. The Eight of Wands therefore implies not merely quick outcomes, but the irreversibility of momentum once Will has been released into the field.

The Triple Goddess Tarot – Eight of Wands concentrates its imagery not on motion already underway, but on the deliberate setting of intent before action unfolds. Here, the eight wands are suspended above the stone archway of a castle doorway—an unmistakable threshold symbol—within which the Crone stands as guardian and arbiter. Unlike the Rider-Waite-Smith image, where the wands are already in flight, these wands hover in poised potential, awaiting conscious direction.

The Crone holds a printed page—written, articulated intention—actively reading and thus internalizing the Word before it is released into manifestation. This contrasts sharply with the RWS Eight of Wands, where intent has already been launched and the outcome accelerates beyond intervention. In the Triple Goddess image, the act of conscious formulation precedes movement, emphasizing responsibility and clarity of will.

A crow flies away from the doorway as if having just delivered the message, symbolizing swift communication between inner knowing and outer action. As a psychopomp and messenger between worlds, the crow represents the guiding intelligence of the will itself—instinctive, discerning, and uncompromising. Here, it may be understood as the will once it has received instruction, carrying intention outward into the unseen currents that shape events.

Where the RWS Eight of Wands emphasizes speed, momentum, and rapid outcome, the Triple Goddess Eight of Wands emphasizes alignment before velocity. This card suggests the necessity of setting priorities, clarifying intent, opening oneself to incoming messages, and making decisive choices before releasing energy into motion. Change is imminent, but it is chosen rather than accidental.

In Hermetic terms, the Rider-Waite-Smith card shows Fire already in motion, while the Triple Goddess card shows Fire being aimed. One depicts the arrow in flight; the other, the moment just before release. Together, they reveal the full cycle of the Eight of Wands: intention formed, message delivered, and will set irreversibly into motion.

In the study of gematria, where numerical values are assigned to letters and words in Hebrew, Greek, and other languages, the number 8 holds significant symbolism and meaning. Here is an exploration of the gematria characteristics and symbolic attributes associated with the number 8:

Numerological and Symbolic Meaning

  1. Infinity and Eternity:

    • The number 8 is often associated with infinity and eternity, symbolized by its shape (∞) when laid horizontally. It represents a never-ending cycle, continuous flow, and the concept of immortality.
  2. Balance and Harmony:

    • Eight is seen as a number of balance and harmony, as it is the double of four (which signifies stability and order). This doubling effect enhances the qualities of equilibrium and completeness.
  3. Renewal and Resurrection:

    • In many spiritual traditions, 8 is linked to renewal, rebirth, and resurrection. In Christianity, the eighth day (following the seven days of creation) signifies new beginnings and the resurrection of Christ.

Gematria in Hebrew

  1. Chet (ח):

    • The Hebrew letter associated with the number 8 is Chet (ח), which is the eighth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Chet symbolizes life and vitality, as it is the first letter of the word "Chai" (חַי), meaning "life."
  2. Connections to Names and Concepts:

    • In gematria, various names and words that sum to 8 have specific meanings. For example, the name "Yitzchak" (Isaac) has a gematria value of 208, which reduces to 8 (2+0+8=10, 1+0=1, 1+7=8). Isaac is associated with laughter and joy, connecting 8 with positive emotions and divine promise.

Cultural and Esoteric Associations

  1. Jewish Tradition:

    • The number 8 is significant in Jewish culture, particularly in the celebration of Hanukkah, which lasts for eight days and nights. This festival commemorates the miracle of the oil that lasted eight days, symbolizing divine intervention and miracles.
  2. Chinese Culture:

    • In Chinese numerology, 8 is considered extremely lucky and prosperous. The word for 8 (八, bā) sounds similar to the word for wealth or fortune (发, fā), making it a symbol of good fortune and success.

Mathematical Properties

  1. Cubic Nature:

    • Mathematically, 8 is a cubic number (2^3), representing solid foundations and strong structures. This ties back to the symbolic interpretation of stability and strength.
  2. Symmetry:

    • The symmetrical shape of the number 8 reflects its association with balance and duality. It signifies a harmonious relationship between opposing forces.

Spiritual and Mystical Significance

  1. Kabbalistic/Qabalistic Interpretation:

    • In Kabbalah, 8 is associated with the sephirah of Hod, which represents glory and splendor. It signifies humility and the acknowledgment of the divine in the material world.
  2. Astrological and Alchemical Contexts:

    • In astrology, the eighth house is associated with transformation, regeneration, and the mysteries of life and death. Alchemically, 8 can represent the transmutation process, the journey from base to noble.

Summary

The number 8 in gematria and various cultural contexts is rich with meanings that span concepts of infinity, balance, renewal, and prosperity. Its associations with life, divinity, and transformation make it a powerful symbol in both spiritual and practical realms.

Both Eight of Wands cards express the Element of Fire, which in its highest Hermetic sense is the Spiral Energy of Spirit itself—the animating current that moves consciousness toward expression. This is not chaotic fire, but directed ignition, a sudden influx of vitality that accelerates awareness, action, and manifestation.

When this spiral force surges, intuition sharpens and perception quickens. Ideas arrive fully formed, often carrying the stamp of originality, inspiration, or even true genius. What is received in this moment is of high quality, not because it is forced, but because it flows along an opened channel. News, messages, or realizations may arrive suddenly, propelling circumstances forward faster than expected.

Accordingly, the Eight of Wands signals acceleration in one’s affairs. Momentum is building. The current is active. Delay only creates friction. This is the moment to rise, claim one’s authentic will, and respond decisively to the call of Spirit in motion.

In plain terms: this is not a card of waiting. It is time to get off the couch, focus the will, and create. The fire has been lit. The signal has been sent. The movement is already underway—go, go, go.

Of paramount importance, inspiration must be brought down to earth through physical action. Left unstructured, even the most luminous ideas dissipate quickly; sparks of inspiration dim, scatter, and vanish when they are not given form. Fire without containment exhausts itself. Thus, organization becomes a sacred necessity, ensuring that speech does not become rash and that actions are not taken without foresight or consequence.

In Hermetic terms, this is the essential labor of translating the subconscious influx of Spirit into the linear, sequential perceptions of the conscious mind. What is received in a flash must be arranged in time, language, and structure if it is to survive incarnation. This descent—from intuition to articulation, from inspiration to expression—is neither simple nor effortless. If it were, our world would be overflowing with fully realized poets, novelists, philosophers, and visionaries.

I often discover that what I am attempting to communicate inwardly is not what emerges when translated into linear terms. The depth arrives all at once, multidimensional and simultaneous, while language insists on sequence and limitation. As a result, I must settle for “baby steps”—measured expressions unfolding one perception at a time—each step refining what could not be said all at once.

This necessity is the reason for the many blogs written to explain one thing: the One Mind expressed through multidimensional subtlety. It is why the Tarot itself requires seventy-eight images to gesture toward a single truth, and why even 0 – The Fool—the pure spiritual-psyche essence of us all—cannot be conveyed in a single sentence, symbol, or card. The Fool contains the whole, and the whole must be approached patiently, sequentially, and with humility.

Creation, then, is not merely inspiration—it is devotion to translation.

The primary meaning of the 8 of Wands is that taking swift and decisive action is your key to success at this time.

A Tarot reading conducted by a Master Magus of the Thoth Tarot is not simply a fortune-telling session—it is a Hermetic operation of consciousness.

Most common tarot readings rely on memorized meanings, intuitive impressions, or psychological pattern-matching. While these can be helpful, they skim the surface of the cards. A Master Magus of the Thoth Tarot works from an entirely different order of depth.

Why a Thoth Magus Reading Is Different

1. The Cards Are Treated as Living Gates, Not Symbols
In the Thoth Tarot, each card is a complete cosmological engine—containing Qabalistic paths, planetary and zodiacal forces, alchemical processes, and precise energetic formulas. A Magus does not “interpret” a card; they enter it, trace its current, and translate that force into language that the conscious mind can apply.

2. Hermetic Qabalah, Not Guesswork
A Master Magus reads through the Tree of Life itself. Every spread is understood in terms of Sephirothic flow, Pathworking dynamics, elemental dignities, and initiatory stages of the Soul. This allows the reading to diagnose where the issue exists—mental, astral, emotional, karmic, or Solar—rather than offering vague reassurance.

3. Initiatory Precision Instead of Generic Advice
Common readers often tell you what might happen. A Thoth Magus reveals what is unfolding now, why it is occurring, and how consciousness must shift to align with Will. The reading becomes corrective, empowering, and transformational—not passive or fatalistic.

4. The Solar Self Is Addressed, Not the Fear-Mind
A true Thoth reading speaks to the Solar/Soul Self, not anxiety, dependency, or superstition. The goal is clarity, sovereignty, and awakened responsibility. You leave with understanding, not confusion—and with direction, not dependency.

5. Decades of Discipline, Not Weekend Training
Mastery of the Thoth Tarot requires long study, ritual discipline, and lived initiation. It is a path walked, not a certificate earned. This depth is felt immediately in the reading’s coherence, authority, and accuracy.
