Above all things, know thyself.

The Archeon Tarot-Herald of Swords

Radiant: Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot-Page of Swords

The Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot Deck adheres to the lodge-bound medieval paradigm, portraying archetypes through the lens of chivalric oaths and moral allegories rather than Hermetic gnosis. In its depiction of the Page of Swords, we see an androgynous youth “swishing” their blade amidst turbulent skies, with winds scattering clouds, hair, and trees alike. The element of Air governs this suit, representing the realm of pure consciousness—the rational mind, thought, and the shifting moods of the psyche.

The restless movement of clouds across the yellow sky illustrates the mercurial nature of thought-emotion interplay: fleeting inspirations, mental skirmishes, and the inner “mood-fighter” struggling to define self-amidst ceaseless winds. The yellow tights of the Page further affirm Air’s signature hue, reflecting intellectual clarity and quicksilver agility.

By contrast, modern occult Tarot—most notably the Thoth Tarot—transcends this medieval frame. Crowley replaces the Pages with Princesses, aligning the court cards with the sacred formula of YHVH (Tetragrammaton), wherein the Princess represents the final Heh—the Daughter, the crystallization of form and the throne of elemental potential. To explore the profound Qabalistic implications of this shift, and the transformative role of the Princess of Swords within the alchemical marriage of Force and Form, I delve deeper in my nontraditional Tarot writings at elitarotstrickingly.com.

The Rider–Waite–Smith Page of Swords presents the blade in a ready, almost combative stance, signaling the Element of Air—alert, analytical, and mentally poised for action. Yet this readiness carries a defensive undertone; the Page stands as though bracing against unseen forces, illustrating a state of vigilance rather than aggression.

Notably, the Page occupies high ground, a subtle yet powerful symbol of oversight and strategic awareness. This elevated position implies the budding leadership qualities of the Page—an aspirant learning to rise above the fray, surveying the landscape of thought before acting.

Dressed in vibrant medieval garb, the Page’s yellow tunic ties directly to the Pythagorean and Hermetic associations of yellow with elemental Air—clarity, intellect, and the mercurial qualities of thought itself. However, this same vibrancy hints at immaturity: mental energy that is sharp yet untempered, eager yet unrefined.

This card may also serve as a cautionary emblem—particularly regarding the impulsive actions or words of youth. The sword of intellect, when wielded without wisdom, can cut indiscriminately, turning curiosity into conflict or making a young seeker’s zeal a cause for concern.

Surely, some may interpret the Page’s stance as arrogant or defiant, mistaking confidence for insolence. In truth, this outward display is a protective mask—a subtle armor woven from attitude rather than steel. Beneath the lifted sword and windswept hair lies a vulnerable and sensitive psyche, one that dares not reveal its inner thoughts or doubts to potential adversaries.

This archetype embodies the early stages of Air’s evolution: the mind awakening to its power but still learning discernment and subtlety. The Page conceals fragility behind bravado, signaling both the promise and peril of youth—an alert, analytical presence that must learn when to defend and when to listen, when to speak and when to remain silent.

The Archeon Tarot-Herald of Swords.

The Herald of Swords in the Archeon Tarot emerges from a cloud of darkness—a feminine angel rising with an unsheathed double-edged sword, signifying the mind’s capacity to both discern and divide, to deliver truth or destruction. Unlike the youthful curiosity of the traditional Page archetype, this figure is a messenger of reckoning, her appearance foretelling swift and often unsettling change.

A trumpet in the upper corner emphasizes the “heralding” motif: the sounding of an inevitable announcement, a call that pierces complacency. Upright, this card represents penetrating insight, decisive communication, and sudden, upsetting news—often the kind that forces growth or quick adaptation. It can signify the arrival of a spy, a warning of espionage, or the necessity for clear-eyed decisiveness amid chaos.

Reversed, the Herald’s message becomes distorted and corrosive. Gossip, cynicism, blackmail, or conspiracies may surface, revealing how mental sharpness can turn into paranoia or attack. Here the double-edged nature of the sword is fully realized: the same clarity that liberates can also wound.

Tarot Personality birth wheel (Pages/Heralds are Princesses)

In the Thoth Tarot, the Princess of Swords rather than a Page or Herald in traditional Tarotcorresponds to the Earthy part of Air and is associated with the astrological signs of Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. This is because, in the system Crowley used, the Princesses rule the quadrant of the zodiac from the last decan of one sign through the next two signs (in this case, from 20° Capricorn to 20° Pisces).

The Princess/Herald of Swords represents an active force of Air, manifesting on the Earthy plane, often implying the initial stages of intellectual or communicative endeavors and the astrological association helps one see into the depths of this personality.

The astrological range from 20° Capricorn to 20° Pisces covers a broad spectrum of characteristics as it spans three different zodiac signs: Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Each degree carries a specific energy, blending qualities of the signs and decans. Let’s break it down by sign and degree:

20° - 30° Capricorn (Third Decan of Capricorn: Mars decan)

  • Keywords: Discipline, ambition, and perseverance mixed with intense drive and determination.
  • Traits: People born in this range tend to have a strong sense of responsibility and are highly determined to achieve success. The influence of Mars adds a competitive and assertive nature, making them hard workers with a strong sense of leadership. There can be some stubbornness or over-focus on material success.
  • Shadow: A tendency toward workaholism or a domineering attitude in pursuit of goals.

0° - 10° Aquarius (First Decan of Aquarius: Venus decan)

  • Keywords: Innovation, independence, and sociability with a touch of idealism.
  • Traits: This decan emphasizes the more creative and friendly side of Aquarius, with Venus adding harmony and a desire for connection. Individuals here are often innovative, freedom-loving, and socially oriented. They value equality, independence, and artistic expression.
  • Shadow: Detachment from emotions or an overly idealistic view of relationships or society.

10° - 20° Aquarius (Second Decan of Aquarius: Mercury decan)

  • Keywords: Intellectualism, communication, and curiosity combined with humanitarian values.
  • Traits: The Mercury influence sharpens the mind, making people born here very communicative, clever, and intellectually curious. They enjoy exchanging ideas, problem-solving, and working in teams. This decan also brings a strong sense of humanitarianism, with a focus on progress and community.
  • Shadow: Over-intellectualizing emotions or becoming too detached and impersonal in relationships.

0° - 10° Pisces (First Decan of Pisces: Saturn decan)

  • Keywords: Sensitivity, spirituality, and emotional depth, tempered by discipline and realism.
  • Traits: While Pisces is known for its dreamy and intuitive qualities, the influence of Saturn here grounds these traits. People born in this decan are often spiritually inclined but have a sense of responsibility and structure in how they approach their emotions and ideals. There is a balance between emotional depth and realism.
  • Shadow: A tendency to suppress emotions or struggle with boundaries due to over-sensitivity.

10° - 20° Pisces (Second Decan of Pisces: Jupiter decan)

  • Keywords: Compassion, expansiveness, and optimism, with a focus on personal growth and empathy.
  • Traits: Jupiter expands the naturally empathetic and imaginative qualities of Pisces, giving those born in this decan a deep sense of compassion, hope, and idealism. They are often drawn to spiritual or creative pursuits and have an expansive view of life. There is a desire to connect with others on a deep emotional level and help those in need.
  • Shadow: Escapism, overindulgence in fantasies, or a lack of practical grounding.

Overall Character of 20° Capricorn to 20° Pisces:

This range combines Capricorn’s ambition and discipline with Aquarius’ innovation and intellectualism, ending with Pisces’ sensitivity and compassion. It spans a shift from the structured, material-focused energies of Capricorn to the imaginative, humanitarian, and emotional realms of Pisces. This blending of earthy, intellectual, and emotional energies suggests a dynamic mix of practical ambition, creative thinking, and spiritual depth.
