The Sovereign Flame — When Fire Learns to Rule

The Rider-Waite-Smith King of Wands and the Ocean Tarot King of Coral present the mature sovereignty of the Fire element: passion that has acquired experience, desire that has discovered direction, and personal power that has learned—hopefully—to do something more useful than simply set the furniture on fire.

Both Kings symbolize authority, charisma, creative force, leadership, courage, sexuality, enterprise, enthusiasm, and the power to inspire movement in others. Yet their Fire is never entirely tame.

That is precisely the point.

The King of Wands is not a candle flame politely illuminating the dinner table. He is the controlled furnace, the volcanic chamber beneath the mountain, the solar fire concentrated into personality.

When balanced, he warms, protects, creates, leads, and inspires.

When unbalanced, everybody in the kingdom begins looking for the fire extinguisher.

The Rider-Waite-Smith King of Wands

The Rider-Waite-Smith King of Wands presents an apparently composed monarch seated upon his throne, yet virtually everything surrounding him tells us that this apparent stillness conceals tremendous internal activity.

He holds a living, leaf-sprouting Wand, immediately establishing that his Fire is not merely destructive.

It is fertile Fire.

The Wand represents Will, libido, vitality, creative imagination, spiritual aspiration, reproductive force, and what older occultists sometimes called the Life Force.

Fire generates.

Fire transforms.

Fire fertilizes consciousness with possibility.

The leaves growing from his Wand therefore tell us that this King possesses the ability to turn Will into Life.

He is not merely enthusiastic.

He is generative.

The Salamander — The Creature Who Lives in Fire

Salamanders appear on the King's robe and throne, while another little salamander rests near his feet.

In medieval and Renaissance occult symbolism, the salamander became associated with the elemental kingdom of Fire.

Paracelsian elemental philosophy later made the salamander the elemental creature specifically belonging to Fire, alongside:

• Gnomes — Earth
• Undines — Water
• Sylphs — Air
• Salamanders — Fire

The King therefore sits surrounded by emblems proclaiming:

This man belongs to Fire.

His exterior may appear composed, but internally he is burning.

That is one of the central psychological mysteries of this Court Card.

The King of Wands does not always appear excited.

Experienced Fire does not need to jump up and down shouting, “Look at me, I'm on fire!”

The truly powerful furnace often makes very little noise.

The Solar Lion

The lions carved upon the throne immediately introduce the symbolism of Leo.

This does not require us to claim that every appearance of the King of Wands means someone literally born with the Sun in Leo. Rather, Leo provides an excellent archetypal resonance for understanding his character.

Leo is ruled by the Sun.

The Sun symbolizes:

Life.
Individuality.
Radiance.
Authority.
Creativity.
Self-expression.
Dignity.
Centrality.

The Sun does not ask the planets for permission to shine.

Likewise, the mature King of Wands tends to possess a natural assumption of authority.

He walks into the room and somehow the room notices.

Sometimes this becomes leadership.

Sometimes it becomes theater.

Occasionally it becomes both.

Leo — The Solar Personality

When the Leo archetype is functioning constructively, we encounter many of the King's finest qualities.

There is confidence without cowardice, ambition without paralysis, creativity without endless hesitation, and warmth capable of energizing everyone nearby.

The healthy King of Wands is often:

Confident, courageous, creative, generous, loyal, enthusiastic, protective, charismatic, ambitious, and capable of inspiring others.

He does not merely have ideas.

He makes other people believe those ideas might actually be possible.

That is leadership.

But solar consciousness casts a solar shadow.

When identification with personal authority becomes excessive, confidence can become arrogance.

Leadership becomes domination.

Pride becomes narcissistic inflation.

Passion becomes impatience.

Protection becomes possessiveness.

The King begins believing that because he is carrying the torch, everyone else must march precisely where he points it.

Welcome to the court of His Majesty, King My-Way-Or-The-Highway.

The Green Current — Fire Must Become Fertile

Among all the hot reds, oranges, and yellows surrounding this King are cooler green and blue-green tones.

Symbolically, these are extremely important.

Green introduces vegetation, fertility, Earth, Venus, growth, and fecundity into an otherwise fiery image.

In Greek cosmological symbolism, this naturally evokes Gaia, the living Earth.

Hermetically, green particularly calls attention to Netzach, the seventh Sephirah, whose planetary attribution is Venus.

Netzach means Victory.

But Netzach is not victory through intellectual argument.

That belongs more naturally to Hod.

Netzach conquers through:

Desire.
Attraction.
Emotion.
Beauty.
Instinct.
Passion.
Magnetism.

Thus, something profound is hidden inside this fiery King:

Fire cannot manifest merely by burning. It must attract something to itself.

Will requires Desire.

The solar King requires the Venusian field.

Masculine projection requires receptive substance.

This is why mature Fire differs from immature aggression.

Immature Fire says:

“I want!”

Mature Fire asks:

“What shall I create?”

Chokmah — Wisdom and the King

Within the Western Hermetic Qabalistic structure, the fiery sovereign principle of the Court Cards is associated with Chokmah, the second Sephirah upon the Tree of Life.

Chokmah means:

Wisdom

It is important that the Hebrew noun Chokmah is grammatically feminine even though the Sephirah occupies the archetypally masculine Pillar of Force.

There is a beautiful Hermetic lesson hidden here.

Reality is not constructed from crude human categories.

Every masculine force contains a receptive dimension.

Every feminine vessel contains dynamic power.

At the Supernal level, opposites have not yet hardened into the divisions we experience below the Abyss.

Chokmah is the tremendous outpouring of Force from Kether.

Kether is the Point.

Chokmah is the Line.

Kether is potential.

Chokmah is motion.

Kether says:

BE.

Chokmah replies:

BECOME.

And the King of Wands becomes the personality-level reflection of that tremendous cosmic impulse.

The King as Yod — The First Flame

In the Qabalistic formula of YHVH, the fiery sovereign corresponds naturally with:

Yod — י

Yod is the primal point of creative Fire.

The Divine Spark.

The seed-force.

The initiating impulse.

From Yod proceeds Heh, Vav, and final Heh—the entire formula of manifestation.

In this sense the King is not merely “the boss.”

He represents Initiating Consciousness.

He begins things.

He impregnates the field of possibility with intention.

This explains why King of Wands personalities frequently become:

Entrepreneurs, inventors, organizers, commanders, performers, explorers, teachers, political leaders, business owners, artists, coaches, adventurers, and occasionally that one relative who somehow turns a family barbecue into a military campaign.

They initiate movement.

Alchemy — The Royal Sulfur

Alchemically, the King of Wands resonates strongly with Sulfur.

Not merely the chemical substance, but philosophical Sulfur:

The fiery principle of activity, individuality, combustion, desire, and Will.

Sulfur says:

I AM

It is the combustible identity principle.

In the balanced alchemical operation, Sulfur must cooperate with Mercury and Salt.

Fire without containment becomes destruction.

Will without intelligence becomes stupidity with confidence.

And unfortunately, history has supplied quite a few examples of that experiment.

The perfected King therefore represents Fire disciplined by consciousness.

He does not extinguish passion.

He gives passion purpose.

That is the alchemical maturation of Fire.

From Wildfire to Hearth Fire

A useful way to understand the spiritual development of the King of Wands is to compare three forms of Fire.

Wildfire consumes everything around it.

Hearth fire warms the household.

Temple fire illuminates consciousness.

All are Fire.

The difference is containment and purpose.

The immature King burns because he can.

The mature King burns because something needs illumination.

That is spiritual kingship.

The Father Archetype

One of the most recognizable manifestations of the King of Wands is the Father, mentor, teacher, employer, commander, or patriarchal leader.

At his best, this person can be a magnificent parent or mentor.

Life around him is rarely dull.

He encourages:

Adventure.

Confidence.

Self-reliance.

Competition.

Creativity.

Courage.

Achievement.

He may teach the child or employee that limits exist largely to be tested.

He often leads by example rather than merely issuing instructions.

His basic philosophy is:

“I did it. You can do it. Now get moving.”

That can be wonderfully empowering.

But it can also become exhausting.

The Drill-Sergeant Father

The shadow King of Wands can establish expectations that are nearly impossible to meet.

He may sincerely believe that pressure creates excellence.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes it creates therapy bills.

This Father or Boss can become:

Impatient, demanding, eccentric, dominating, argumentative, impulsive, intimidating, and quick to punish failure.

Reward may come quickly.

So may punishment.

Yet there is often an interesting integrity hidden even within his harshness:

He usually will not demand something he is unwilling to do himself.

If he expects everyone awake at five in the morning, he was probably awake at four-thirty.

If he expects courage, he demonstrates courage.

If he expects hard work, he works harder.

This is why people may simultaneously admire him, fear him, love him, and desperately wish he would go fishing for the weekend.

The Ocean Tarot — King of Coral

The Ocean Tarot King of Coral expresses this same fiery sovereignty through the mythic language of the Sea.

Since Coral corresponds to Wands, we encounter an apparent elemental paradox:

Fire beneath Water.

That paradox is precisely what makes the image so interesting.

A powerful merman King sits confidently upon his fire-coral throne, holding a scepter crowned with fire coral.

His physicality immediately communicates strength.

Unlike the distant ceremonial monarch, this King appears capable of personally handling whatever swims through his kingdom.

His gaze is steady.

Focused.

Intentional.

There is little uncertainty here.

He looks directly toward his subject with the concentration of someone accustomed to making decisions.

This is not tentative authority.

This is:

Embodied Power.

Fire Beneath the Ocean

How can Fire exist beneath Water?

Hermetically, very easily.

The physical elements are symbols of states of consciousness.

Ocean does not merely mean literal water.

It represents the vast field of:

Emotion.

Subconsciousness.

Dream.

Memory.

Instinct.

Collective imagery.

Psychic receptivity.

The King of Coral therefore represents Will operating within the psychic ocean.

This is particularly interesting from a parapsychological perspective.

Human beings constantly affect one another through expression, posture, expectation, emotional contagion, suggestion, charisma, and focused attention.

Esoteric traditions extend this model further, speaking metaphorically or metaphysically of aura, psychic presence, thought-form, and projected Will.

The King of Coral embodies the person whose presence enters a room before his résumé does.

People feel him.

Whether one interprets that effect psychologically, parapsychologically, or metaphysically, the archetype remains recognizable.

Some individuals simply possess unusually strong psychic gravity.

The Magnetic King

The Ocean King of Coral can therefore represent someone who is:

Optimistic.
Confident.
Innovative.
Inspirational.
Protective.
Magnetic.
Experienced.
Energetic.
Strong.
Charming.
Visionary.
Decisive.
Bold.
Daring.
Passionate.
Fearless.
Proud.

This person often becomes a natural center of activity.

People ask:

“What are we doing?”

And everyone turns toward him.

That is the healthy King.

Unfortunately, if his consciousness becomes distorted, everybody may still turn toward him—but now mainly to determine where the emergency exit is.

The Shadow King of Coral

Fire becomes dangerous whenever power separates itself from wisdom.

The ill-defined King of Coral may become:

Forceful.

Extremist.

Rude.

Impulsive.

Hasty.

Unreliable.

Ruthless.

Unjust.

Tyrannical.

Vindictive.

Abusive.

Bitter.

Or strangely powerless beneath all the bluster.

This last condition is especially important.

Tyranny frequently disguises weakness.

A person securely seated upon their throne does not spend every waking hour reminding everyone that they are King.

The insecure ruler must constantly demand recognition.

The true ruler simply governs.

Metaphysics — Will Shapes Experience

Metaphysically, both Kings represent the principle that conscious intention organizes experience.

This should not be reduced to the simplistic idea that wishing strongly enough causes the universe to hand us whatever we want.

The Hermetic principle is more demanding than that.

Thought becomes effective when joined with:

Emotion.
Imagination.
Will.
Action.
Persistence.
Embodiment.

The King of Wands therefore represents the metaphysical formula:

Idea + Desire + Will + Action = Manifestation

He converts internal Fire into outward consequence.

The world changes because somebody moved.

Parapsychology — The Projected Personality

From a parapsychological and psychological perspective, the King is particularly useful for examining projection and interpersonal influence.

Powerful personalities generate powerful responses.

Around such individuals, people may experience:

Excitement.

Fear.

Admiration.

Sexual attraction.

Competition.

Inspiration.

Submission.

Resistance.

The King can therefore become an enormous screen for other people's projections.

One person sees:

Father.

Another:

Tyrant.

Another:

Hero.

Another:

Lover.

Another:

Threat.

The actual King may contain elements of all these things—or none of them.

This is why working with Court Cards teaches us not merely to ask:

“Who is this person?”

but also:

“What archetype does this person awaken within me?”

That question belongs equally to Tarot, Jungian psychology, and serious magical self-examination.

Cosmology — The Stellar Fire Within the Human

Cosmologically, Fire has always carried profound significance because the visible universe itself is filled with stars.

Our Sun is not merely a poetic symbol of Life.

Nearly every ordinary biological process upon Earth ultimately depends upon solar energy.

Thus, the ancient association between Sun, Fire, Life, sovereignty, and divine power was not entirely fanciful.

We literally live because a star burns above us.

The King of Wands internalizes this cosmic image.

There is a Sun within the personality.

A center around which the lesser contents of consciousness organize themselves.

Hermetically, the spiritual work is not to enlarge the little ego until it thinks it is the Sun.

Quite the opposite.

The work is to align the personality with the deeper Solar Self.

Otherwise, the ego mistakes reflected sunlight for personal divinity.

And there are few things more dangerous than a candle that believes it is Ra.

Theology — The King and Divine Authority

Theologically, the King of Wands raises an ancient question:

What makes authority legitimate?

Power?

Birth?

Wealth?

Fear?

Charisma?

Divine appointment?

Hermetic philosophy gives a more demanding answer.

True authority emerges from alignment.

The human Will becomes spiritually potent when personal desire aligns itself with a greater ordering principle.

In Thelemic language, this approaches the mystery of True Will.

In Christian mystical language, one might say:

“Not my will, but Thine.”

In Qabalistic language, the lower personality learns to align itself with the higher pattern of the Tree.

Different vocabulary.

Similar mystery.

The perfected King does not say:

“Everyone must obey me.”

He asks:

“What does the Work require?”

That is the transformation from ruler to Sacred King.

Spiritual Evolution — The Phoenix King

When the King of Wands appears in a reading, one of his deepest meanings can be spiritual regeneration.

A former personality may be burning away.

Old ambitions.

Old fears.

Old identities.

Old limitations.

The past becomes fuel.

From it arises something stronger.

This is the Phoenix formula.

Not destruction for destruction's sake.

Transformation through Fire.

The person may discover that qualities once experienced as anger, restlessness, rebellion, or sexual intensity can be transmuted into:

Courage.

Creative force.

Leadership.

Magical Will.

Spiritual aspiration.

This is alchemy performed upon personality itself.

When the King of Wands or King of Coral Appears Upright

When either King appears strongly defined in a reading, it may indicate:

• Spiritual evolution occurring at a deep core level, as though an old personality is becoming fuel for a new Phoenix-Self.
• Experiencing the conviction of Spirit, accompanied by significant internal and external movement.
• The emergence of genuine leadership ability.
• Healthy masculine or projective power capable of organizing complicated situations.
• The ability to focus upon long-range goals while still moving decisively.
• A strong-minded person capable of influencing others through sheer presence and Will.
• Wit, humor, warmth, generosity, and considerable persuasive ability.
• Someone whose internal convictions and external behavior are increasingly aligned.
• A devoted Father, family member, protector, employer, mentor, or leader.
• Creativity seeking visible expression.
• Entrepreneurial activity.
• Sexual vitality and passion.
• Courage after a period of hesitation.
• A need to stop discussing what might happen and make something happen.

The King says:

You already have the match. Strike it.

The Reversed or ill-defined King of Wands

When the Rider-Waite-Smith King appears reversed—or when the Ocean King of Coral is severely ill-defined—the same enormous Fire has become distorted.

Possible meanings include:

• Impersonal power without human compassion.
• Spiritual or intellectual authority without concern for individual welfare.
• Emotional coldness concealed beneath charisma.
• Excessive identification with one's own mind, authority, or ideology.
• Dazzling ambiguity—brilliant speech with questionable substance.
• Fickleness.
• Broken promises.
• Explosive anger.
• Impulsiveness.
• Being driven by passions rather than directing them.
• Domination.
• Authoritarian behavior.
• Arrogance.
• Abusive leadership.
• A weak leader compensating through aggression.
• Ruthlessness.
• Grandiosity.
• Burnout.

There is an especially important occult lesson here:

Spiritual power does not automatically equal moral development.

A person may possess extraordinary intelligence, charisma, mystical experience, psychic sensitivity, magical ability, or personal magnetism and still be emotionally immature.

Power magnifies whatever holds it.

Give wisdom power and wisdom accomplishes much.

Give insecurity power and insecurity purchases a throne.

The Difference Between the Two Kings

Although both cards express sovereign Fire, their artistic environments emphasize different dimensions of the archetype.

Rider-Waite-Smith King of Wands

The RWS King appears more ceremonial, solar, terrestrial, and dynastic.

His symbolism emphasizes:

Kingship.

Leo.

Salamanders.

Vegetative Fire.

Royal authority.

Established worldly leadership.

He is the Fire that has constructed a Kingdom.

Ocean Tarot King of Coral

The Ocean King appears more instinctual, muscular, magnetic, emotional, and mythological.

His underwater throne places Fire within the Ocean of the subconscious.

He therefore emphasizes:

Psychic presence.

Emotional authority.

Primal confidence.

Magnetic attraction.

Protection.

Focused Will.

He is the Fire that commands the Deep.

One governs the visible kingdom.

The other governs the currents beneath it.

Together they reveal a complete formula:

External Authority must be supported by Internal Sovereignty.

Light and Shadow

The King of Wands teaches one of the great lessons of elemental Fire:

Power is not the problem. Unconscious power is.

Fire itself is neither good nor evil.

Fire cooks the meal.

Fire burns the house.

Fire warms the child.

Fire destroys the forest.

The difference is consciousness.

Likewise, charisma can inspire or manipulate.

Leadership can liberate or dominate.

Sexual passion can unite or possess.

Confidence can empower or become arrogance.

Will can create civilization—or demand everybody kneel before it.

Therefore, when this King appears, ask:

Am I directing my Fire, or is my Fire directing me?

That question alone can turn a reversed King upright.

The King Within

Ultimately, Court Cards are not merely descriptions of people we meet outside ourselves.

They are states of consciousness living within us.

The King of Wands asks us to claim the sovereign Fire within without becoming enslaved by it.

Stand upright.

Know what you intend.

Take responsibility for your power.

Create something.

Protect what matters.

Lead when leadership is required.

Step aside when another is better qualified.

And above all, remember:

A crown does not make a King. Conscious mastery of power does.

The Rider-Waite-Smith King of Wands and Ocean Tarot King of Coral therefore proclaim the same fiery Mystery from two different kingdoms:

Become the ruler of your own creative Fire before attempting to rule anyone else's.

For the true King does not need to dominate the world.

He has already accomplished the considerably more difficult task—

He has learned to govern himself.
