The Return to the Childhood of the Sun — Hermetic Insight into the RWS Key 19

The Rider–Waite–Smith Sun card offers far more than its bright simplicity suggests. As in all Mystery symbolism, its “child on the white horse” is not a sentimental image of innocence regained, but a Qabalistic revelation of the return to Solar Consciousness—the restored memory of our own Divine inheritance.

The Child of the Sun: Returning to Our Solar Birthright

The golden child riding the white horse is the perfected human in their solar rebirth. The white horse, long associated with Apollo, is not merely a mount—it is the steed of illumination, the purified Animal Soul (Nephesh) now harmonized with the Solar Self (Tiphareth).

Where the Fool (Key 0) represents the unborn divine potential carried as a white-hot plasmic Sun, The Sun (Key 19) represents the conscious recovery of this potential within incarnation. The Child does not “grow” into divinity; he remembers it. The journey from Key 0 to Key 19 is the arc of forgetfulness dissolving into recollection.

In Hermetic Western Qabalah, this is the moment when personality ceases to be the “shadow cast by the Soul” and begins instead to radiate from within the Soul’s core.

This is why the Child is naked—not vulnerable, but unconditioned.

The Sun as the First Symbol in Tarot: Life Power Revealed

The very first symbol in Tarot is the Sun behind the Fool. Crowley is explicit on this: nothing in Tarot can be understood without understanding the Sun as Life Power. It is the primal pulse of Kether descending into manifestation.

  • In Key 0, the Sun is white: the unconditioned Life Power of the Infinite.

  • In Key 19, the Sun is golden: the same infinite Power now recognized within the finite vessel of the human being.

Yellow in Hermetic color doctrine always implies self-conscious solar awareness. The Child sees the Sun because the Child is the Sun.

The Sun is the Collecting Intelligence—an ancient Qabalistic title describing the psychic center that gathers and distributes Celestial Impulses. These impulses are vibrations of plasmic light encoded with cosmic information.

This is the esoteric definition of Soul:
A collective array of scintillating Life Forces (the Sephirothic energies) expressing themselves as breath, vitality, identity, and purpose.

Prana, Spirit, and the Solar Breath

In the Hermetic explanation, we touch a profoundly Hermetic truth: Spirit and Breath are the same word.
The Greek spiro, Latin spiritus, Hebrew ruach, and Sanskrit prana all cross-confirm the ancient mystery:
Life Force enters the human through breath because we are Plasmic–Solar beings in organic disguise.

Prana is not simply air—it is:

1. Physical: Breath as the Mechanism of Solar Animation

  • Oxygen sustains cellular life.

  • Exhalation purifies and releases spent forces.

  • Conscious breath regulates the nervous system, opening the gates to meditative perception.

2. Energetic: The Plasma-Field of the Soul

Prana is identical with the astral light and with solar plasma. It is the subtle electromagnetic breath that threads the Macrocosmic Sun to the microcosmic human body through the chakric Tree of Life.

3. Spiritual: The Pulse of the I AM

To call oneself “Spirit” is to recognize oneself as the intelligent vibration that breathes the body.
You are not the lungs—you are the force that moves them.
You are Pranic Fire entering from the Macrocosm and animating the Microcosm.

Thus Key 19 reveals your true identity:

You are a Sun.
You are the Celestial Child.
You are the first exhalation of the Cosmic Breath made flesh.

Prana as the Solar Vital Force — Hermetic Expansion for the Sun Card (Key 19)

If the Child of the Sun in the Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot symbolizes our return to the luminous innocence of Solar Consciousness, then Prana is the very medium through which that radiance becomes embodied. Prana is not merely breath; it is the vital Solar Fire that animates all worlds, flowing from the great Macrocosmic Sun into the microcosmic human form.

In Hermetic Qabalah, this living current is the interplay of Ruach (the Mind-Breath) and Neshamah (the Divine Breath) as they descend down the central column of the Tree of Life. The yogic model is simply another map describing this same Solar river.

Below is a refined expansion of the functions of Prana—now expressed in Hermetic language that resonates with the Thoth Tarot and the Solar path of Tiphareth.

2. The Energetic Function — Prana as the Vital Solar Current

Where Yogis speak of nadis, Hermeticists speak of the Serpent Paths and the Lightning Flash. Where Yogis speak of the chakras, the Western tradition speaks of the Sephirothic centers within the body of the Microcosm. Both systems describe the same energetic anatomy.

Energy Channels (Nadis ↔ Serpent Paths)

Prana circulates through subtle channels, which yogic philosophy names Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna.
Hermetically, these correspond to:

  • Ida → the Lunar Serpent, rising along the left-hand pillar of Form (Binah)

  • Pingala → the Solar Serpent, rising along the right-hand pillar of Force (Chokmah)

  • Sushumna → the Central Pillar, the path of the Soul descending from Kether to Malkuth

These currents determine physical vitality because the physical body is only the dense shadow of these subtle channels.

Balancing the Energy Centers (Chakras ↔ Sephirothic Spheres)

Prana equilibrates the energetic centers—what Yoga calls chakras, Hermetic Qabalah calls Sephirothic vortex points within the subtle anatomy.
Balanced centers allow Prana to flow without obstruction, producing:

  • Physical resilience

  • Emotional coherence

  • Heightened perception

  • Increased access to the Solar Self in Tiphareth

This is exactly what the Child of the Sun depicts: an unobstructed central channel where the Solar Life Power floods the organism.

3. Mental and Emotional Functions — Prana as the Regulator of the Ruach

Prana is the “breath” of the Ruach—the intellect, imagination, and emotional body of the Soul.
When Prana flows strongly and rhythmically, the Ruach becomes a clear mirror for the Solar Will.
When Prana is erratic, the Ruach becomes cloudy and reactive.

Mental Clarity and Focus

Regulated breath calms the lower mind, dissolving the frantic patterns produced by the false ego. This produces:

  • piercing focus

  • reduction of mental clutter

  • access to symbolic and intuitive thinking

  • the ability to enter meditative absorption

In the Hermetic view, the Ruach becomes a polished surface able to reflect the Solar Genius (the Holy Guardian Angel).

Emotional Regulation

Because the nervous system is the organic expression of the energetic body, breathwork directly restructures emotional responses.
Steady Pranic flow:

  • quiets anxiety

  • softens anger

  • dissolves fear

  • restores sovereignty over reactive impulses

Thus the Sun card’s joy is not naïve—it is the emotional clarity of a fully regulated Ruach illuminated by the Solar Self.

4. The Spiritual Function — Prana as the Bridge to the Universal Sun

Here is where the Solar doctrine truly reveals itself:
Prana is the breath of the Macrocosm entering the Microcosm.
It is literally the inhalation of the Universe into the human temple.

Inner Awakening and Higher States of Consciousness

When Prana ascends the central channel (Sushumna), a Hermetic initiate would say:

  • the Serpent Fire awakens

  • the Ruach becomes transparent

  • the Soul begins to perceive itself as Solar Light rather than psychological structure

This is why the Child stands beneath a blazing Sun—he has become transparent to his own Source.

Connection with the Divine or Universal Life Force

Prana is the vibratory continuity between the individual Soul and the Universal Sun (Tiphareth ↔ Kether).
Through breath the aspirant experiences:

  • Unity with the Cosmic I AM

  • Overcoming of the illusion of separateness

  • Direct communion with the Solar Logos

  • The state of harmony known as “the perpetual noon of the Heart”

When Prana flows unobstructed, the boundary between self and cosmos dissolves.
The Adept recognizes:

“I do not breathe; the Universe breathes me.”

Hermetic Synthesis: Prana as the Solar Child’s Breath

In Tarot terms:

  • The Fool (Key 0) carries the primordial Sun as potential.

  • The Sun (Key 19) reveals the actualized Solar Breath animating the human form.

  • Prana is the invisible force that transforms Key 0 into Key 19.

  • It is the mechanism by which the divine inheritance becomes embodied illumination.

Thus the Child on the white horse is the perfected Pranic body—the living temple of Solar Fire.

Prana is not just life.
Prana is the Sun remembering itself in you.

The Stone Wall of the Sun Card — The Enclosure of Partial Truth

The stone wall behind the Child on the Rider–Waite–Smith Sun card is often overlooked, yet it expresses one of the deepest Hermetic lessons in the entire Major Arcana: Truth filtered through the senses is always partial.

The wall represents the limits of human perception when consciousness relies solely on sensatory evidence—the domain of materialistic science and empirical logic. While useful in the world of forms, sensory perception is an enclosure, never the Truth itself.

Cheth — The Fence of Consciousness

This symbolism corresponds directly to the Hebrew Letter Cheth (ח), meaning fence, enclosure, or field-boundary. Cheth is the Path of the Chariot (Key 7), which in Hermetic Qabalah describes the Soul’s vehicle—its container during incarnation.

Thus the wall symbolizes:

  • the enclosure of identity

  • the boundary of the senses

  • the limitations imposed by linguistic thought

  • the psychic “shell” the personality mistakes for Self

Human speech, too, acts as an enclosure. Words attempt to “fence in” identity, but they can only describe the shadow, never the Solar Being that casts it. Words are tools of representation, not expressions of Essence. They are symbolic fences, not the field of the Soul itself.

This is why I emphatically state:

We are not words; we are Suns.
We are emanations of the Living Divine Creative—Solar Souls within a human enclosure.

Key 19 shows the moment that enclosure becomes transparent.

The Living Sun — Straight Rays and Wavy Rays

The Sun in the RWS image radiates two kinds of rays:

  • Straight rays — the direct, unconditioned descent of Life Power

  • Wavy rays — the vibratory, serpentine currents of the Astral Light

This dual emanation mirrors the Hermetic doctrine that the Sun is not a material furnace but a Living Celestial Being, a conscious Intelligence distributing light, life, and will throughout the solar system. Hence the Sun is given human features—because consciousness, not gas, is the essence of Solar Life.

Within the Adept’s understanding, the Sun is the outward face of Tiphareth in the Macrocosm; the Child is its reflection in the Microcosm.

The Five Sunflowers — The Four Kingdoms + the Crown

The five sunflowers behind the wall further expand this symbolism. Four of them correspond to the traditional natural kingdoms:

  1. Mineral

  2. Vegetable

  3. Animal

  4. Human

The fifth is the solar wreath on the Child’s head—the crown of the regenerated state, the future kingdom of humanity once it awakens to its Solar origin.

Five here signifies the quintessence, the fifth element: Spirit ruling over the four kingdoms. The Child embodies this quintessence in human form.

Thus the Sunflowers reveal the evolutionary arc of consciousness rising from mineral stability to the radiant “Solar Human” of Key 19.

The Child and the White Horse — Humanity Regenerated

The naked Child represents regenerated humanity—the state of consciousness after the enclosure of Cheth has been transcended. The Child is unclothed because nothing is hidden; identity is no longer fenced in by words, conditioning, or sensory limitations.

The white horse—symbol of Apollo and the purified Nephesh—carries the Child forward, indicating the instincts themselves have been illumined by the Solar Self.

This is why the Child holds the red banner: the victory of Spirit over form, the life-force now consciously directed.

“Become as a Child” — Entering the Supernal Kingdom

The Sun card recalls the ancient initiatory injunction attributed to the Solar Logos, Zeus-Christos:

“Unless you become as little children, you cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

This “Kingdom” is not a place but a state of consciousness—the Supernal Triad of:

  • Kether (Pure Being)

  • Chokmah (Wisdom)

  • Binah (Understanding)

To become “as a child” is to shed the false enclosures—words, fears, social hypnosis—and return to the transparent radiance of the Solar Soul.

Humanity’s future state is already imaged in the Child:
A being whose senses no longer distort Truth, because consciousness radiates from the Sun within.

Hermetic Summary

  • The stone wall = Cheth, the enclosure of sensory consciousness.

  • Words are fences; identity cannot be enclosed by language.

  • The Sun’s rays show the dual descent of Life Force: direct and vibratory.

  • Five sunflowers reveal the evolution of the kingdoms into quintessence.

  • The Child and horse represent the regenerated human being—Solar, innocent, sovereign.

  • The card fulfills the Initiate’s realization:
“The Kingdom is within you and all around you.”

In the head/brain, which is the Sun of the body are collected, all the human powers. In fact, the Latin word "countenance" means to "hold together or contain". Therefore, we find in Key 19 plain intimations of authority and leadership. Left brain is Animus (Masculine), and right brain is Anima (Feminine), as our brains are perfect copies of our Androgynous Souls/Solar Selves.

Triple Goddess Tarot — Key 19: The Sun

Joy as the Radiance of the Integrated Self

The Triple Goddess Tarot presents Key 19 with a distinctly feminine solar resonance. A golden-haired maiden dances barefoot upon a lush, fertile mound—an image overflowing with life, renewal, and embodied joy. She is encircled by blossoms and sunflowers, the perennial children of the Sun who always turn their faces toward illumination.

Her swirling red dress becomes a spinning solar disk at her feet. With arms outstretched, she extends a rainbow-colored shawl to the blazing sky, which itself shimmers with rainbow aurora. This is a Solar Goddess in motion—no longer merely reflecting the Sun, but dancing as the Sun’s own emanation.

The message is unmistakable:
Allow light to wash over you.
See yourself bathed in radiance.
Choose joy as an act of spiritual will.

This Key encourages the aspirant to craft a bright, empowered image of themselves—to practice optimism, not as naïve hope, but as a disciplined Solar stance of consciousness. You are asked to look to the sustaining forces of your inner and outer kingdoms: the outer Sun above, and the inner Sun at the heart of your subtle anatomy.

As in all Solar doctrine, this joy is not one-sided. The maiden dances with both shadow and light. Her rainbow shawl symbolizes the spectrum of the psyche—the integration of emotional polarities into one radiant whole. This is not escapism; it is alchemical recombination.

The Hermetic Meaning of Joy and Renewal

In Western Hermetic Qabalah, the Sun always signifies regeneration. Not mere happiness, but the rebirth of the Solar Self after the trials of darkness. The Triple Goddess Sun card communicates this regenerative current through:

  • Joy – the natural resonance of the unburdened Soul

  • Renewal – the resurgence of life after a period of shadow

  • Vitality – the quickening of the inner Sun

  • Optimism – the conscious choosing of illumination

  • Integration – harmonizing light and dark within the emotional body

The dancing maiden is the human being rediscovered—not constrained by social identity or enclosure (Cheth), but radiant, whole, and luminous.

The Sun Card as a Radiant Influence in a Spread

When Key 19 appears in any Tarot layout, its presence is therapeutically radiant. In my own Hermetic phrasing:

“This card has the ability to ‘heal’ or enlighten the cards around it.”

This is true across all well-constructed divinatory systems. The Sun does not merely modify surrounding cards; it bathes them in higher vibratory light, revealing their best possible expression and mitigating shadows.

  • A difficult card above the Sun becomes a challenge illuminated.

  • A troubling card below the Sun becomes a lesson now consciously mastered.

  • A negative influence to the side becomes an obstacle softened by clarity and truth.

The Sun raises the entire spread’s energetic frequency.

But the Solar Current Has a Double Edge

This caveat is not only correct—it is Hermetic law.

The Sun heals, rejuvenates, and clarifies.
But the Sun also burns, scorches, dries, and destroys.

In the Triple Goddess image, the joyful maiden dances with a power that is not tame. Within the human body is a Seed-Sun—a plasmic core of living cosmic fire. Yogic systems call this Kundalini; Hermetic Qabalah sees it as the Serpent Fire of the Middle Pillar, the radiant force of Tiphareth in ascent.

This force:

  • revitalizes

  • illuminates

  • transforms

  • purifies

  • but also burns away illusion, ego-structure, repression, and fear

The same fire that enlightens will destroy whatever is false.

Thus the Sun card heralds not only joy but the responsibility of radiance. To invoke the Sun is to invoke the truth without filters.

In Yogic traditions, Kundalini is represented as a serpentine force, coiled three and a half times at the root chakra (Muladhara), near the base of the spine. In Western Hermetic teachings, this energy can be viewed as a kind of “secret fire” or astral light—a subtle, solar-derived form of life energy. Terms like “solar plasmic” highlight its connection to a cosmic life-force that resonates with the vitality of the Sun. As Kundalini ascends, it travels through the energetic pathways (nadis) and chakras of the subtle body, bringing heightened awareness, insight, and expanded perception.

Spiritual Growth and Integration

Properly awakened, Kundalini leads to an unfolding of spiritual awareness, often described as tapping into one's divine nature. It can open the doors to mystical experiences, self-realization, and profound inner healing. As it rises through the chakras, Kundalini refines the individual’s consciousness, transcending limitations, shedding mental conditioning, and revealing deeper layers of spiritual truth.

The Cautions Against Premature Awakening

Because of its intensity, many traditions strongly caution against attempts to force or hasten Kundalini’s awakening without sufficient preparation. Some potential issues that can arise if Kundalini energy is stirred prematurely or without proper grounding and guidance include:

  1. Physical Discomfort and Health Issues:
Sudden surges of energy can cause headaches, insomnia, nerve pain, tension in muscles, or unusual sensations like heat or vibrations in the spine or limbs. These symptoms occur because the body’s subtle energy channels may be blocked or unprepared for the sudden influx of force.

  2. Emotional Turmoil and Psychological Imbalances:
Kundalini can bring repressed emotions, traumas, and psychological patterns to the surface all at once. Without adequate support, understanding, or spiritual maturity, these intense emotional waves may lead to confusion, anxiety, fear, depression, or even identity crises. Proper integration methods, meditation, and therapeutic support can help navigate these emotional upheavals.

  3. Disturbed Energy Flow and Imbalances:
When awakened too quickly, Kundalini may not flow smoothly through the intended channels, causing energetic disharmony. This can manifest as erratic mood swings, feelings of being ungrounded, or a sense of inner chaos. It may take diligent practice, energy balancing techniques, and experienced guidance to restore equilibrium.

  4. Misinterpretation of Spiritual Experiences:
Someone who awakens Kundalini prematurely may mistake energetic phenomena, visions, or strange sensations for spiritual truth, leading to confusion or grandiosity. Without proper training, knowledge, or mentorship, it’s easy to misread these experiences, hindering genuine spiritual growth instead of fostering it.

Guidelines for Safe and Gradual Awakening

  • Foundational Practices: Regular meditation, breathwork (pranayama), ethical discipline, healthy lifestyle choices, and foundational spiritual studies help prepare the subtle body for Kundalini’s gradual ascent.
  • Qualified Guidance: Seeking the assistance of experienced teachers—be they yoga gurus, Western mystical mentors, or qualified energy healers—ensures that one can navigate the awakening process with clarity, safety, and understanding.
  • Patience and Integration: Approaching Kundalini awakening gently, over time, allows the practitioner to integrate changes as they arise. This results in a more stable, harmonious unfolding of consciousness rather than a disruptive upheaval.

Conclusion

Kundalini, when understood as a solar plasmic energy, represents a powerful catalyst for human transformation. Both Yogic and Western Hermetic traditions recognize its potential to uplift consciousness, expand inner vision, and ultimately unify the seeker with a higher spiritual reality. Yet, this potency comes with the caveat that care, preparation, and responsible guidance are essential. Properly approached, Kundalini awakening can be a profound blessing on the path to enlightenment. When rushed or forced, however, it may result in unnecessary difficulties that derail rather than enhance spiritual development.

Hermetic Summary of the Triple Goddess Sun

  • Rainbow shawl = emotional integration and psychic wholeness

  • Sunflowers = the psyche turning toward illumination

  • Rainbow sky = the full spectrum of consciousness revealed

This Key calls the aspirant to embrace the totality of their internal light, to dance with it openly, and to allow themselves to be renewed by the Solar radiance already living within them.

1*There are several types of pranayama exercises, each with distinct benefits for the body, mind, and spirit. Here are a few widely practiced ones, along with their traditional benefits and recommended techniques:

1. Nadi Shodhana Pranayama (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

  • Benefits: Helps calm the mind, balance energy channels (nadis), reduce anxiety, and enhance focus. It's said to balance the right and left hemispheres of the brain.
  • How to Practice:
    • Sit in a comfortable position.
    • Close your right nostril with your thumb and inhale deeply through the left nostril.
    • Close the left nostril with your ring finger, then open and exhale slowly through the right nostril.
    • Inhale through the right nostril, close it, and exhale through the left. This completes one cycle.
    • Practice 5–10 cycles, gradually increasing over time.

2. Kapalabhati Pranayama (Skull Shining Breath)

  • Benefits: Energizes the body, increases mental clarity, stimulates digestion, and detoxifies the lungs and respiratory system. It’s also considered to cleanse and activate the third eye and crown chakras.
  • How to Practice:
    • Sit upright with your spine straight.
    • Take a deep inhale, then exhale quickly and forcefully through the nose, contracting the lower abdomen with each exhale.
    • Inhales are passive and natural between each sharp exhale.
    • Start with 20 pumps, gradually increasing to 50 or more.
  • Note: This pranayama should be avoided by those with high blood pressure, pregnancy, or respiratory issues.

3. Bhramari Pranayama (Bee Breath)

  • Benefits: Soothes the mind, reduces stress and anger, relieves tension, and improves concentration.
  • How to Practice:
    • Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
    • Place your index fingers on the cartilage of your ears to partially close them.
    • Inhale deeply, then gently press on the cartilage while exhaling slowly, making a humming sound like a bee.
    • Focus on the vibration and sound, feeling it throughout your head and body.
    • Repeat for 5–10 breaths.

4. Ujjayi Pranayama (Victorious Breath or Ocean Breath)

  • Benefits: Enhances focus, calms the nervous system, and is warming. This breath is often used during asana (yoga poses) to sustain energy.
  • How to Practice:
    • Inhale slowly through the nose, partially constricting the throat, as though you were breathing through a thin straw.
    • Exhale with the same constriction, creating a soft, ocean-like sound.
    • Maintain a steady rhythm, focusing on the sound and sensation in your throat.
    • Practice for 5–10 minutes, or incorporate it into a yoga session.

5. Sheetali Pranayama (Cooling Breath)

  • Benefits: Cools the body, calms the mind, and reduces feelings of anger and anxiety. It’s often practiced in hot weather or when feeling agitated.
  • How to Practice:
    • Sit in a comfortable position.
    • Roll your tongue into a tube (or if you can’t, keep it flat).
    • Inhale slowly through the rolled tongue, feeling the cooling sensation.
    • Close your mouth and exhale through the nose.
    • Practice 5–10 rounds or more as needed.
  • Note: Avoid this technique if you have respiratory or throat issues.

6. Bhastrika Pranayama (Bellows Breath)

  • Benefits: Boosts energy, stimulates the nervous system, strengthens lung capacity, and invigorates body and mind.
  • How to Practice:
    • Sit comfortably, keeping the spine straight.
    • Inhale deeply, expanding the abdomen, and then exhale forcefully, contracting the abdomen.
    • Both inhale and exhale should be quick and forceful, using abdominal movement.
    • Start with 10 rounds, then take a break, and repeat up to 3 sets.
  • Note: Avoid if you have high blood pressure or heart conditions.

Each of these pranayama techniques has unique effects, so you may want to choose or combine them depending on your needs. Remember to start gradually and focus on maintaining a calm, meditative state throughout.
