Rider–Waite–Smith Queen of Swords vs. Ocean Tarot Queen of Spears

Western Hermetic Qabalah, Astrology, Divine Feminine Wisdom, and the Liberation of the True Self

“Truth does not wound the Soul. It cuts away the lies that imprison it.”

The Queen of Swords: The Sovereign Mind

The Rider–Waite–Smith Queen of Swords and Ocean Tarot Queen of Spears portray the sovereign intelligence of the Divine Feminine: perceptive, independent, courageous, and unwilling to sacrifice truth for social approval.

In the Ocean Tarot, Spears correspond to the traditional suit of Swords and the element of Air, representing thought, reason, language, and discernment.

Although Arthur Edward Waite's Tarot emerged from the symbolic teachings of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, much of its initiatory philosophy remains implicit. The later Thoth Tarot of Aleister Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris expresses these Qabalistic relationships more directly.

Both Queens teach a fundamental Hermetic lesson: the mind must serve consciousness, not imprison it.

Rider–Waite–Smith: The Sword of Discernment

The Queen sits upon her elevated stone throne beneath a windswept sky. Her upright sword declares intellectual authority, while her extended left hand suggests diplomacy, judgment, and a willingness to hear another perspective.

She is no mere executioner of ideas. She is the Sober Matriarch, who understands that peace without truth is simply deception wearing comfortable shoes.

Her throne bears a winged cherubic head, suggesting innocence, spiritual guardianship, and the Divine Child. Clouds and birds emphasize her dominion over the airy world of Mind.

In Hermetic symbolism, she is the feminine power that distinguishes reality from projection, wisdom from opinion, and the authentic Self from the socially manufactured personality.

She can be compassionate without being gullible and severe without becoming cruel.

Her sword is not hatred. It is discrimination guided by Understanding.

The Four worlds of Qabalah and symbolism.

Binah: The Great Mother of Understanding

In Western Hermetic Qabalah, the Queen corresponds to Binah, the Third Sephirah, expressed through Yetzirah, the Formative World.

Binah means Understanding and is traditionally associated with Saturn, the Great Sea, the Supernal Mother, and the Sanctifying Intelligence.

Where Chokmah represents the dynamic Will-to-Force, Binah provides the receptive Will-to-Form.

Together with Kether, they constitute the Supernal Triad, the archetypal foundation of manifestation.

Binah is therefore much more than a passive mother. She is the cosmic power of definition, limitation, gestation, and structure.

Without limitation, manifestation cannot occur.

Without boundaries, individuality cannot exist.

Without time, becoming has no sequence.

Thus, Saturn's restrictive nature becomes one of the greatest gifts of the Divine Mother: the opportunity for consciousness to experience itself through form.

We may poetically call her Mother Time-Space.

The masculine image of Father Time and the feminine image of the Great Mother represent complementary ways of contemplating cosmic order. Their symbolic polarity reminds us that Divine Consciousness transcends human gender.

The Queen of Swords embodies this maternal intelligence within the realm of thought.

She understands that to define something clearly is also to distinguish what it is not.

Her sword performs the intellectual equivalent of the alchemical operation Separatio: dividing the essential from the unnecessary.

A little spiritual housekeeping never hurt anyone—although the false ego generally files a complaint.

Kali Ma- the destroyer of illusion

The Queen, Kali-Ma, and Freyja: Faces of Divine Feminine Sovereignty

Across religious and mythological traditions, we discover feminine figures who combine wisdom with formidable transformative power.

These are symbolic correspondences rather than claims that every goddess represents the same historical deity.

Kali-Ma: Liberation Through Severance

In Hindu traditions, Kali represents fierce divine power, transformation, liberation, and the destruction of ignorance.

Her severing imagery offers a powerful parallel to the Thoth Queen of Swords, who carries a severed head.

In Hermetic psychological interpretation, the head can represent the false personality: the collection of inherited assumptions, social conditioning, and fearful identities mistaken for the Self.

Kali's destructive aspect can therefore be read as liberation from attachment, not hostility toward human life.

The Divine Mother does not need to destroy your individuality. She needs only to expose the illusions that prevent you from knowing it.

The Norse goddess Freyja embodies love, beauty, sexuality, fertility, magic, and warfare.

Freyja: Love, Sorcery, Sovereignty, and Death

The Norse goddess Freyja embodies love, beauty, sexuality, fertility, magic, and warfare.

She is associated with Seiðr, the Norse magical tradition involving prophecy, trance, and the manipulation of fate. In the Ynglinga saga, Freyja teaches this magical art among the Æsir.

Her mythological attributes include:

  • Fólkvangr: The realm where she receives a share of those slain in battle.

  • Brísingamen: Her celebrated necklace, associated with beauty and extraordinary value.

  • The falcon-feather cloak: A magical garment associated with flight and transformation.

  • Her cat-drawn chariot: An emblem of her distinctive divine sovereignty.

  • Seiðr: Her command of prophecy, magical knowledge, and hidden possibilities.

Wolves and winter may enrich modern artistic interpretations of Freyja, although neither is among her defining attributes in the surviving Norse sources.

Her connection with the Queen of Swords is especially illuminating: both suggest female sovereignty, intellectual independence, the courage to confront mortality, and mastery of hidden knowledge.

Freyja is not traditionally identical with the Queen of Swords, but she provides a compelling mythological analogy.

Her falcon cloak symbolizes the ability to cross boundaries of perception, while the Queen's sword distinguishes truthful insight from deceptive appearances.

One traverses the unseen through magical vision; the other brings that vision under the discipline of Understanding.

Astrology: 20° Virgo Through 20° Libra

Astrology: 20° Virgo Through 20° Libra

The Thoth and Golden Dawn Queen of Swords govern the final decan of Virgo and the first two decans of Libra.

This division combines Mercury's analytical intelligence, Venusian refinement, lunar sensitivity, and Saturnian judgment.

Astrological decan
Planetary decan rulerHermetic expression
20°–30° VirgoVenusRefined discrimination, intelligent observation, practical understanding
0°–10° LibraMoonSensitivity, adaptability, diplomacy, emotional perception
10°–20° LibraSaturnDiscipline, responsibility, boundaries, mature judgment

Virgo is ruled by Mercury, while Libra is ruled by Venus. The individual decans contribute additional planetary influences.

The result is a woman who can recognize a problem, understand its emotional consequences, and make a judgment without surrendering to sentimentality.

Virgo examines the evidence. Libra weighs the consequences. Binah insists that truth must take form.

In the Thoth image, her sword and severed head also suggest a balance between discerning intelligence and discarded illusion.

Although Saturn is not the ruler of her entire astrological range, it remains essential to her Qabalistic relationship with Binah.

Yetzirah: The Formative World of Mind

The Queen of Swords is the Watery part of Air.

This elemental formula is especially important.

Water symbolizes receptivity, intuition, and the capacity to receive impressions. Air symbolizes intellect, communication, and conceptual understanding.

Their union produces intuitive intelligence: the ability to perceive the emotional content behind words without abandoning rational discernment.

In Yetzirah, the World of Formation, consciousness organizes impressions into images, symbols, and mental patterns.

From a metaphysical perspective, the Queen illustrates how repeated thoughts can shape an individual's experience of identity.

From a parapsychological perspective, she represents the importance of distinguishing intuition from suggestion, projection, and wishful thinking. An unusual impression may be meaningful without automatically proving an external psychic source.

She reminds the practitioner that genuine discernment includes the willingness to question one's own interpretations.

In theological symbolism, her sovereignty reflects the creative Logos: the ordering power through which meaning becomes intelligible.

In cosmological analogy, Binah is the principle by which undifferentiated possibility acquires boundaries and structure. This is a philosophical correspondence, not a literal scientific explanation of the universe.

The Queen's wisdom is not that she believes everything she perceives. It is that she has learned to examine what she perceives

Adam Khadmon with Daath sephiroth symbolism

Da'ath: The Divine Child and the Recovery of Self-Knowledge

Within Hermetic Qabalah, Da'ath means Knowledge and occupies the mysterious position beneath the Supernal Triad on the central axis of the Tree of Life.

Although not ordinarily counted among the Ten Sephiroth, Da'ath symbolizes the relationship between Chokmah's Wisdom and Binah's Understanding.

In contemplative symbolism, we may imagine Da'ath as the Knowledge born from their union—the Divine Child of conscious realization.

Da'ath also represents a perilous threshold where accumulated knowledge must become direct Understanding rather than intellectual vanity.

The descent and ascent of the Tree of Life symbolism

The human journey down the Tree of Life may be interpreted as the descent of consciousness into increasingly concrete forms, culminating in Malkuth.

The return journey represents conscious reintegration.

Here, the Queen of Swords performs an essential service: she removes false definitions of Self.

The conditioned personality says:

“I am what others expect, what society permits, and what fear allows.”

The awakening consciousness replies:

“I AM, and I shall discover what that means through conscious experience.”

In this interpretation, the true Solar Self is illuminated through Tiphareth, the Sixth Sephirah—Beauty, harmony, and the mediating center of consciousness.

The Queen does not create that Inner Sun. She clears away the mental clouds preventing its recognition.

The Self is not merely a question seeking an acceptable answer.

It is an expression of consciousness capable of discovering and embodying its own meaning.

You are not here to become somebody else's definition of you. You are here to know thy self.

Queen of Spears-The Ocean Tarot

Ocean Tarot Queen of Spears: The Mermaid and the Shark

The Ocean Tarot Queen of Spears gives the same intellectual sovereignty an entirely different visual language.

A dark mermaid Queen sits upon a great scallop-shaped throne, holding a commanding spear. Beside her swims a great white shark, resembling a powerful familiar. Above, sunlight penetrates the ocean's surface.

Unlike the airborne Rider–Waite–Smith Queen, this sovereign intelligence resides beneath the waters.

Here, the imagery becomes particularly appropriate to the Watery part of Air.

The ocean represents emotion, subconscious impressions, and the depths of the psyche.

The spear represents directed thought, intellectual penetration, and the ability to cut through confusion.

The great white shark symbolizes vigilance, instinct, efficiency, and the capacity to act decisively.

The sunlight descending from above can be interpreted as the illuminating influence of Tiphareth penetrating the depths of the subconscious.

The Queen's calm expression suggests that she does not need to demonstrate her authority through noise or aggression.

She knows her power.

Her shark knows it too.

And neither requires approval from the neighborhood guppies.

The Queen's Constructive and Destructive Expressions

When well-defined, she is:

Truthful, witty, protective, independent, perceptive, candid, objective, fair, resourceful, practical, intellectually mature, and capable of constructive criticism.

She solves problems without surrendering to emotional confusion.

When ill-defined, she may become:

Pessimistic, bitter, excessively critical, manipulative, emotionally distant, vindictive, verbally cruel, or inclined toward malicious gossip.

Her problem is not intelligence, but intelligence divorced from compassion.

The same sword that liberates consciousness can wound when wielded by resentment.

The Tarot personality birth wheel

The Queen of Swords in Relationships and Everyday Life

The Queen is not necessarily cold or antisocial.

Her mature expression can be charming, diplomatic, witty, and exceptionally perceptive.

She listens carefully, considers competing viewpoints, and attempts to maintain fairness.

Yet beneath her gracious manners stands an uncompromising commitment to personal dignity.

She may value family, home, and emotional security while simultaneously pursuing professional achievement and intellectual independence.

Her challenge is not choosing between love and reason, but bringing them into intelligent cooperation.

She offers compassion without surrendering her boundaries.

The Queen knows that not every disagreement requires a battle. However, when deception threatens her integrity, she can become formidable.

She does not suffer fools gladly, but genuine wisdom teaches her that disagreeing with someone does not automatically make that person a fool.

That distinction separates sovereignty from arrogance.

Divinatory Meaning: When the Queen Appears

When the Queen of Swords or Queen of Spears appears in a Tarot reading, she may indicate:

  • Liberation from false identities: Releasing masks, pretenses, and socially conditioned roles.

  • Intellectual maturity: Developing clarity, objectivity, and disciplined reasoning.

  • Wisdom through sorrow: Transforming difficult experiences into Understanding.

  • Personal sovereignty: Establishing healthy boundaries and independent judgment.

  • Fearless communication: Finding the courage to express uncomfortable truths.

  • Professional competence: Handling difficult responsibilities with intelligence and efficiency.

  • Psychological integration: Bringing intuition and reason into conscious cooperation.

She frequently represents someone who has suffered, learned, and emerged with greater discernment.

Her wisdom was not given freely. She earned it by examining experience rather than becoming its prisoner.

Shadow Expression or Reversed Meaning

For readers who use reversals, the shadow qualities include calculating coldness, emotional isolation, dishonesty, malicious criticism, manipulation, and bitterness.

In Thoth-based Hermetic practice, reversals are not necessary to recognize these possibilities. Every archetype contains constructive and destructive expressions.

The Queen becomes imbalanced when discernment becomes condemnation or healthy detachment becomes an inability to connect.

Her corrective lesson is simple:

Be sharp enough to recognize deception and wise enough not to become its reflection.

Final Hermetic Synthesis: The Sword That Frees the Soul

The Rider–Waite–Smith Queen of Swords and Ocean Tarot Queen of Spears reveal two expressions of the same initiatory principle.

One rules from the clouds of rational Mind.

The other sits within the oceanic depths of emotion and subconscious awareness.

Both represent the meeting of intuition and intellect beneath the sovereignty of Binah.

Queen of Spears-The Ocean Tarot

Freyja contributes the symbolism of feminine autonomy and magical knowledge. Kali offers the transformative image of severing illusion. Binah provides the cosmic principle of Understanding and form.

Together, these correspondences illuminate the Queen's essential message:

True sovereignty is not control over others. It is mastery of one's own perception, speech, judgment, and identity.

The false ego fears the Queen because she asks the one question it cannot comfortably answer:

“Who are you without your inherited labels, rehearsed fears, and borrowed beliefs?”

The Solar Self need not fear that inquiry.

For the sword of Understanding does not destroy the True Self—it reveals what has been concealed.

Above all things, know thyself.

And remember: the Queen of Swords does not require you to lose your head to find enlightenment. She merely recommends that you stop allowing your head to lose you!
